Make a down payment – Your FINAL Payment

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

After the roller-coaster ride we’ve all taken the past two years called the global economy, we’re starting to witness an interesting trend at MPG Motors. We are seeing an increase in floor traffic, in sales, excitement and interest coming through the front door. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 50cc scooter, a 220cc Blur, a used ride or a 650cc bike, lately they have all been interesting to someone.

A Man Thinking

And what we are seeing and hearing from other dealers too was a steady increase in floor traffic starting in June and building through August. For example, we sold one scooter for sure and probably two – one Monday! What is changing? It’s a determined, eyes-opened customer that seems a little tougher than last year or even earlier this year. Less frightened, more committed to a course of action. They are shopping for quality, comparing prices and features but then they pull the trigger.

Here is what I think has changed…

Besides a home purchase, buying a car is usually pointed to as the “second largest purchase” a person makes. I looked over some car ads from local automobile dealerships. 48, 60, 72 month financing is “available” – thanks! Thank-you very much!

Down payments for both automobile purchases and for leases seem to run in the $2,000-$3,000 range. Monthly payments generally start around $200 / month and go up from there.

What I think is occurring is that the average person decides that no economist knows what is going to happen 6 years from today. Consequently they don’t want to commit to 72 $200 monthly payments.

But they know that today, they want something to “Get to work”, “Get to school” or “Get a smile!” A vehicle that makes them laugh! So, they are getting a vehicle – an entire transportation solution – for the same amount of money that they would have to pay to even start an automobile purchase or lease. So, in our door they come!

A breath of fresh air! You can see it in the eyes. Transportation and fun for the down money on a car! We’ve just reduced prices to bang out some bikes – Buddy 125’s for $2300, Buddy Internationals for $2800, new Hyosung’s starting at $3299 (while supplies last). We talk about PA inspections that only cost $25 instead of $70 for cars. Insurance that runs $160/year – with collision and not just liability. Two years of worry-free driving and even roadside assistance with some of our products. All for an average selling price that is the same as the down payment on a car.

Couple that with those price reductions that we just rolled out – and the end result is a number of people are going to have a lot more money to spend where they want and on what they want instead of paying off a loan!

Feel The Burn – Our LED Lighting Solutions!

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

MPG Motors now offers custom LED lighting solutions for our bikes. Ron has finished some beautiful installations that have our scooters and motorcycles “floating on a cloud of light”.

Starting out at around $100 installed, from accent lighting at one extreme to snow and ice melting eyeball burners, Ron can give your bike the ability to be seen from low-earth orbit.

Did I ever mention that scooters and bikes are supposed to be fun?

I thought so.

Calling all FUNDraising Groups!

Friday, August 6th, 2010

One of the activities we really like to push at this time of year is to help out worthy non-profit, private schools, clubs and organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area with scooters (usually) where we cut our margins to the bone. This lets the group make maximum money from an auction or sale to support their work while really increasing awareness of bikes and riders in the area – that always helps every rider!
Buddy Scooter
In the case of a 50cc scooter, they can auction or raffle a vehicle driveable by anyone with just a PA Drivers License. For the past two years, the Upper Bucks SERTOMA Club donated almost $5000 to the American Cancer Society and we got two terrific new customers who received Buddy scooters!

On October 15th at the Spring Mill Country Club in Ivyland, PA, we’ll have a Buddy 50cc scooter for the HealthLink Medical Center fund raising golf tournament.

Here’s where we need help. We know some groups but we don’t know most of them. Plus, we only have time to reach out to some of these organizations – usually through email. If you know of a group (or better, a person in that group) that we should contact, please give us a call and let us know. Thanks!

The American Motor Scooter Association (AMSA)

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

MPG Motors is a member of the American Motor Scooter Association (AMSA). The AMSA includes a number of the most respected dealers in the industry. A few examples. AMSA members include the Sportique family of dealerships in Colorado. Bob Hedstrom’s Scooterville in Minnesota, Phil Water’s Pride of Cleveland Scooters, Mike Frankovich’s NOHO Scooters in Hollywood and Barry Gwin’s San Francisco Scooter Centre.

These are dedicated scooterists that have succeeded in their business and the industry by putting their customers first and focusing on selling only quality products. Here at MPG Motors, we try to do that as well and are proud to be a member of this elite group.

On the AMSA website, there is a list of what the AMSA considers to be quality scooters. All members agree to adhere to a set of top quality customer practices. The AMSA also involves themselves with industry suppliers, rider training, scooter clubs, and anyone who is actively promoting the fun of riding a scooter!

The bottom line is that the AMSA is a non-profit trade association dedicated to the task of promoting the general welfare of the motorscooter industry in the United States.

That is a mission statement that MPG Motors supports 100%!

Get A Buddy A Buddy – Update – Nominations Due By May 15th!

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Here is the update on the Get A Buddy A Buddy Scooter Giveaway.

First, please take a look at the press release here. In that press release you’ll see that we want to extend this to as many worthy recipients as we can but we need the support of some sponsoring people, groups or companies. We could use your help to administer this program, help judge the entries (in to MPG Motors by May 15th at midnight), be here on May 29th. Let us know if you are on-board and we can count on you!

On May 29th, we will be giving away at least one Buddy Scooter at MPG Motors to the individual that needs it the most. That free Buddy, however, needs a Buddy!

How many more scooters can we giveaway?

Here is a message from Ira Faro, a member of the EZ Riders Club. Please read this carefully. Make sure you take a look at the part about the lack of mass transit options for some of the people in his program. This is exactly the type of folks we want to support and this shows how a Buddy Scooter can make a fundamental difference in a person’s life!

Ira writes, “We have a program at the Conference of Churches called PEP (Permanent Employment Program). Primarily funded through United Way, the program recruits and trains men and women with poor job histories but who are serious about looking for full-time work. PEP has three phases. In the initial phase, trainees are taught basic work culture – how to dress, being on time, how to interact with co-workers, creating a resume, and so on. Folks who complete that training go on to the second phase, hands-on training in one of three areas – Food Service, Janitorial, or Basic Office. They do the actual work here at the Conference offices with a regular schedule, time sheets, and they receive a stipend equal to the minimum wage for hours worked. The third phase kicks in when they have completed that training – assistance with job search and mentoring during the early phases of outside employment.

These folks are faced with a number of barriers. They may have grown up without an adult in the house to model the work ethic. There may be child care issues. A major barrier is transportation from their homes (often inner city) to major centers of potential employment – in the Lehigh Valley that would be suburban industrial parks. The Conference can provide bus tickets, but often the only jobs that come open are on the second and third shifts as workers with seniority on those shifts bid down to the more desirable first shift jobs. The buses don’t run that late.

As a former motorcyclist and current scooterist, the idea of being able to win a scooter for one of these deserving folks is very attractive. I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to find funding to purchase scooters for them, even at deep discount, but if telling this story encourages others to participate in this program, you can certainly use our name.”

Thanks Ira for that message and thanks for all the work that you contribute. We are all going to help as much as we can!

Four MPG Recommended Favorites For Your Browser!

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

One decade into a new millennium, the ability of a company to tell you what you should think about their products is so OVAH! Think back. It’s not too hard to remember sitting like a bump watching TV, seeing commercials about products and watching more TV. 51 minutes of show, 9 minutes of commercials. “Join us again next week when we …!” Fade to black.

Compare that to Angie’s List, to a viral You Tube video, blog opinions on just about everything. Facebook. Twitter.

We have four of our own favorites in our neck of the woods. You might know about them, or maybe not. None of these sites are managed by the respective company. Passionate owners are the core of these sites and contribute the majority of the content you will find there. So, without further delay – here are four of my favorites:

Alternative Cruisers was with MPG Motors at the very beginning of our relationship with Hyosung. Alternative Cruisers is a user-driven site for cruisers that are beyond the Japanese metric brands and Harley/Victory. The Owner/Operator of ACD is Pennsylvania’s Own, Bill Ramby I’ve known Bill for some time now and he is a first-class guy with a first-class site. Hyosung isn’t the only brand discussed by a long shot. Bill looks at all alternative brands, but I would say that a large percentage of the site discussions surround the Hyosung products.

Along the lines of ACD but with a slightly sharper focus on Hyosung and with more sport bike leanings is Korider (Korean Rider). John Adamo (skadamo) scans the web for Hyosung news and reviews and between ACD and Korider, you get indepth coverage for all things Hyosung from tech tips to rider reports. If you have a Hyosung or want one, check them out.

On to Modern Buddy! Modern Buddy is THE site to talk about your Genuine Scooter. Modern Buddy has forums for all the Genuine products and some great stories about what folks are doing with their scoots! That Genuine President, Philip McCaleb reads Modern Buddy … avidly … should tell you that this is the place to be for GSC.

Last up is SYMForum.com. SYMForum is administered by, none other than skadamo from korider.com! One of the neater things about this forum is the input and influence of worldwide SYM riders on the discussions. The ability to benefit from the experiences of folks from around the world is a real plus to a new owner.

Please do a favor to the moderators of these sites: These sites are labors of love for the administrators rather than a pathway to riches! Visit the site, register as a user, introduce yourself and then dig into the site and see what others are discussing and what has already been discussed. If you are new to forums, all of these sites have a search function. If you have a question, odds are someone already had that question before you and the answer may already be out there.

These particular sites have built lifelong friendships by people that, like you, share a passion for riding on the same bike that you enjoy! Check them out when you can!

MPG Motors – One of Hyosung’s TOP 30 Nationwide!

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Hyosung ST7

We were honored February 19th by Hyosung Motors America when MPG Motors was named as one of Hyosung’s TOP 30 dealers in the US. Hyosung Motors America is gaining recognition as the newest major player in the extremely competitive US motorcycle market. Our committment and our success with Hyosung products comes only from you! We don’t succeed without you! Thank-you for helping us reach this level of success!

Hyosung Motors America made the TOP 30 announcement at the public debut of the new 2010 Hyosung ST7 during the Chicago International Motorcycle Show.

It was an exciting announcement and the ST7, a brand new model from Hyosung, demonstrates another aggressive move to take on the Japanese brands in the light-middleweight cruiser segment. In a year when other major vendors are foregoing new model introductions for 2010, Hyosung now offers a fully fuel-injected motorcycle lineup and exciting new products.

The ST7 is a classically styled 700cc cruiser loosely based on the popular GV650 from Hyosung.

The ST7 has a wide tank and handlebars as well as large sweeping fenders. It features front and rear disc brakes and a fuel injected, liquid-cooled 8 Valve DOHC engine. A belt drive delivers power to the rear wheel. The MSRP has been set at $7,299 and it will be available in black, red or white. Hyosung Regional Sales Manager Brian Rose reports, “Consumers and industry people alike were very impressed with what our GV650 offered. Still, there was a call for a classically styled version of our popular cruiser. We answered it.”

We are totally jazzed to be selected by Hyosung as one of their top dealers! When we started with them, we told Hyosung years ago that “We wanted to work with a brand that would grow with us.” We’re sure we made the right choice and, with your support, they seem to be happy with us too!

Get A Buddy A Buddy Scooter!

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Things are tough right now. Even if you are doing well you probably know someone who isn’t. If you are doing well, that is great. It really is! Four out of five people in the U.S. are at least working if the statistics are correct. It seems to me that a lot of people are hurting anyways, working or not, and we don’t like that very much.

MPG Motors wants to do what we can to help those that are not doing well and what MPG Motors does is sell transportation solutions. What we sell gets people from here to there. If you know of a person that can’t get to a job, get to school, that needs some transportation but doesn’t have any, if someone can’t get places for whatever reason – we want to help.

Buddy Scooter

MPG Motors has developed “Get A Buddy A Buddy” – a program to offer a scooter, helmet, gloves and an armored coat at a significantly discounted price to organizations or individuals willing to buy a scooter for someone. While it’s crazy to think about doing that for a new car, we think a discounted scooter might just be doable as a purchase for some folks or groups. Hold a raffle, a silent auction, take up a collection – these are just some of the ways that this can work. We can wrap a 50cc scooter into this that only requires a PA Driver’s License or if the individual needs a faster scooter for quicker roads – we can do this with our bigger scooters.

Next, I have talked with Philip McCaleb, the President of Genuine Scooter Company. Philip has generously offered MPG Motors a Buddy scooter that we can give to someone that really needs it. I am open to suggestions how we can determine the person that really needs it. I might ask you all for help on this. So we will have one scooter to give away and others that sell at a discount to groups or individuals buying them for others. We have two ways to help. But, I need your help too. We can’t do this without you.

We would love to be able to give these scooters away ourselves. Last year wasn’t very good for us either but we can and want to do something and this is what we can do. I really feel we need to come together and to pull together. It’s getting about that time to start moving levers, breaking eggs and getting some things done. Let’s make some things better for some people!

This is what it’s all about.

Hyosung Motors America Visits MPG Motors

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The President of Hyosung Motors America, Tony Kim, stopped by MPG Motors yesterday. A fascinating individual with a big job – Tony covers not just the US, but has responsibility for all of North and South America. He previously ran a 1000 person operation for Daewoo in Malaysia before joining S&T Group in Korea. Tony brought a manager from S&T Motors with him to talk, first-hand with us, about their products. We went in our service area – Tony and Y.J. Kwon weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty – literally! Then we had a great meeting which covered the full range of what matters to MPG Motors – our customers, our product, quality, warranty, marketing, pricing, brand and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

HMA is in great hands and I like what S&T Motors is doing.

Here we are in front of the GV650 with our Philly Motorcycle Show 1st place trophy.
